An SEO Title (often called a Title Tag) is the title of a webpage that appears in search engine results like Google. Instead of being displayed directly on the actual webpage for visitors to read, it lives hidden in the site’s code to tell search engines what the page is about.
SEO Title vs. Main Title (H1)
- Where it appears: The SEO title shows up on search engine result pages (SERPs) and browser tabs. The main title (or H1 tag) is the big headline readers see at the top of the page when they click through to your site.
- Primary audience: An SEO title is crafted to catch the eye of someone scrolling through Google search results. A main title is designed to engage someone who is already reading your content.
- Length and constraint: SEO titles are strictly constrained by space so Google doesn’t cut them off. Main titles can be longer and more descriptive.
Ideal Character Length
- Target range: Keep SEO titles between 30 to 60 characters (or around 580 pixels).
- Truncation risk: If your title exceeds this length, search engines will truncate it with an ellipsis (…), which can hide important context or cut off your brand name.
How It Works
- Relevance signaling: Search engine bots crawl the title tag to determine the primary topic and keyword relevance of your page.
- Click-Through Rate (CTR): A clear, intriguing SEO title acts as digital real estate advertising, persuading users to click your link over competitors.
- Browser identification: It serves as the label on browser tabs, helping users locate your page when multiple tabs are open.
