A Meta Description is a brief summary of a webpage that appears directly under the SEO Title in search engine results. Like the SEO title, it lives in the site’s hidden code rather than on the page itself, serving as a short pitch to convince users that your link has the exact answer they need.
Meta Description vs. On-Page Content
- Where it appears: The meta description shows up on Google’s search results page (SERP) and when links are shared on social media. On-page content is the actual text visitors read after clicking through.
- Primary purpose: Its main job is conversion—getting searchers to click. On-page text focuses on retention—providing value and keeping readers on your site.
- Google’s discretion: While you write a meta description, Google doesn’t always use it. If Google thinks a snippet from your actual page content answers the user’s query better, it will display that instead.
Ideal Character Length
- Target range: Aim for 150 to 160 characters (or around 960 pixels on desktop, slightly less on mobile).
- Truncation risk: Anything longer than 160 characters will typically get cut off with an ellipsis (…), leaving your sentence or call-to-action incomplete.
How It Works
- Ad copy effect: Think of it as free ad space. A well-written summary with a clear call-to-action (e.g., “Learn how to…”, “Shop the best…”) boosts your Click-Through Rate (CTR).
- Keyword highlighting: When someone searches for a term included in your meta description, search engines often bold those words, drawing the searcher’s eye directly to your result.
- Indirect SEO impact: While Google confirmed that meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, higher click-through rates send positive signals to search engines that your page is relevant.
